St Angelos Fort Kannur

St Angelos Fort Kannur, also known as Kannur Fort, is located in the coastal area of the Kannur district in Kerala. It is the second oldest fort in Kerala, following Fort Immanuel in Kochi, which was constructed by the Portuguese in the year 1503.

Don Francisco de Almeida, the Viceroy of Portugal, obtained permission from the local Kolathiri king to establish a Portuguese settlement in the Malabar region in 1505. He selected a suitable location in Kannur. The initial construction of the fort used wooden materials, But in 1507, they began building a stone fort at the site, primarily using laterite stone.

A brief history of St. Angelo’s Fort in Kannur

The Portuguese maintained control of the fort for nearly 158 years until it was captured by the Dutch in 1663. The Dutch made significant modifications, including defensive projections, to safeguard the fort from maritime threats.

In 1772, after 102 years of Dutch occupancy, the fort was handed over to King Ali Raja of the Arakkal kingdom, which was the only Muslim kingdom in Kerala. However, the British captured the fort in 1790 and used it as a military base for the Malabar region until India gained independence in 1947.now it is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Aralam, a famous wildlife sanctuary located in the Western Ghats, about 35 km from Kannur town. It covers an area of approximately 55 square kilometers. The sanctuary features a tropical and semi-evergreen forest where you can observe a diverse range of plant species, including rosewood, teak, eucalyptus, and bamboo, among others. Group trekking is allowed with permission from the forest department and relevant authorities. The most renowned trekking route leads to Aralam Waterfalls.
