St Angelos Fort Kannur
St Angelos Fort Kannur, also known as Kannur Fort, is located in the coastal area of the Kannur district in Kerala. It is the second oldest fort in Kerala, following Fort Immanuel in Kochi, which was constructed by the Portuguese in the year 1503.
Don Francisco de Almeida, the Viceroy of Portugal, obtained permission from the local Kolathiri king to establish a Portuguese settlement in the Malabar region in 1505. He selected a suitable location in Kannur. The initial construction of the fort used wooden materials, But in 1507, they began building a stone fort at the site, primarily using laterite stone.

A brief history of St. Angelo’s Fort in Kannur
The Portuguese maintained control of the fort for nearly 158 years until it was captured by the Dutch in 1663. The Dutch made significant modifications, including defensive projections, to safeguard the fort from maritime threats.
In 1772, after 102 years of Dutch occupancy, the fort was handed over to King Ali Raja of the Arakkal kingdom, which was the only Muslim kingdom in Kerala. However, the British captured the fort in 1790 and used it as a military base for the Malabar region until India gained independence in 1947.now it is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The nearest attractions to St. Angelo’s Fort include Muzhapilangad drive-in-beach, Snake Park Parasinikadavu, Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary, and Arakkal Museum. While these are located in the Kannur district, they are not very close to St. Angelo’s Fort. However, it is possible to visit these destinations in a single day.

In addition to snakes, you can see other reptiles such as lizards and turtles. Peacocks is one of the attractions and we can see different types of birds. Entry hours are from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM, and the entry fee is 20 rupees for school students and 30 rupees for others. Children below 5 years of age and senior citizens above 80 are permitted to enter without fee..
The Arakkal Museum kannur
The Arakkal Museum is a significant historical attraction associated with the Arakkal family, a prominent Muslim dynasty that ruled the Malabar region for centuries. It is located approximately 1.5 km from St. Angelo’s Fort. The museum is situated within the Arakkal Kettu, which was the residence of the Arakkal Ali Raja. Visitors can explore various weapons, paintings, furniture, and other items of historical importance here. Museum’s entry time 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM.
Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
Aralam, a famous wildlife sanctuary located in the Western Ghats, about 35 km from Kannur town. It covers an area of approximately 55 square kilometers. The sanctuary features a tropical and semi-evergreen forest where you can observe a diverse range of plant species, including rosewood, teak, eucalyptus, and bamboo, among others. Group trekking is allowed with permission from the forest department and relevant authorities. The most renowned trekking route leads to Aralam Waterfalls. The sanctuary also offers Watchtower view .
